Cybersecurity protocols activated; Wilmington, Morehead City, and Charlotte facilities affected

Wilmington, NC — North Carolina Ports confirmed that a cyberattack on Tuesday, Aug. 4 disrupted operations at its Wilmington, Morehead City, and Charlotte Inland Port facilities, prompting activation of its Cybersecurity Contingency Plan and coordination with state and federal partners. The incident caused early‑morning delays before systems were stabilized and normal operations resumed later in the day.
NC Ports reported that its IT team initiated emergency cybersecurity procedures immediately after detecting the breach. The agency engaged the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the North Carolina Department of Information Technology, and the U.S. Coast Guard to secure affected systems, support mitigation efforts, and maintain continuity of port operations during the disruption.
The cyberattack slowed gate activity Tuesday morning, but NC Ports stated that systems were restored and functioning normally by the afternoon. No extended impacts to vessel schedules or cargo‑handling equipment were disclosed. The agency said it continues to monitor systems and coordinate with cybersecurity partners as needed.
NC Ports indicated it will provide additional updates if new information becomes available.
