City officials aim to curb density and public safety concerns along the tourist corridor

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The City of Myrtle Beach Planning Commission revisited a proposal on July 7 aimed at restricting occupancy for future bars and nightclubs along Ocean Boulevard. The proposed ordinance would cap the maximum capacity for new establishments at 150 people.
The measure is being driven by concerns over density and public safety in the popular tourist district. During the commission meeting, city planning and zoning director Kenneth May highlighted the potential impact of high-capacity venues on the area, explaining that having multiple nightclubs with capacities of 500 people could result in thousands of patrons being released onto Ocean Boulevard at once, creating significant management and safety concerns.
While the Planning Commission has not yet passed the ordinance, they plan to recommend the measure to the Myrtle Beach City Council. A public hearing is scheduled for August 1, where the ordinance will be considered before moving to the City Council for a final approval vote.
