Monarch Meet Up Returns With Native Plants and Free Milkweed

Whiteville event focuses on host plants that sustain local butterflies

WHITEVILLE, NC — The 5th Annual Monarch Meet Up will be held May 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Penn’s Grill on E. Commerce Street, offering residents a chance to learn how specific host plants support the Columbus County Butterfly Highway.

Organizers say butterflies rely on more than bloomseach species needs particular plants where they can lay eggs and feed.

The event highlights key host plants such as milkweed for monarchs, parsley, dill, and fennel for black swallowtails, violets for fritillaries, asters for pearl crescents, spicebush for spicebush swallowtails, and passionflower for gulf fritillaries.

Attendees can pick up free milkweed, shop native plants from Shelton’s Herb Farm, and join all‑ages activities with Ever Art Co.

Volunteers will be available to answer questions about starting or expanding pollinator gardens. The event is free and open to the public.
