Authorities in Columbus County are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly displayed a rifle during a confrontation with an Animal Protective Services (APS) employee.
According to information confirmed through public‑safety listings and county agency roles, the dispute occurred while the APS employee was performing official duties. The man, who was inside his truck at the time, reportedly lifted or displayed a rifle in a manner that caused the employee to retreat and request assistance. No injuries were reported.
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office oversees APS operations, and deputies typically respond when APS personnel encounter threats, aggressive animals, or hostile individuals. In cases involving firearms, investigators generally take statements from the involved employee, review any available video or audio recordings, and determine whether the suspect’s actions meet the threshold for criminal charges such as assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats, or going armed to the terror of the public.
Officials have not yet released the name of the man involved, whether the weapon was seized, or whether charges have been filed. The Sheriff’s Office has also not issued a formal statement describing the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
The investigation remains active as deputies continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
