Horry County, SC — Horry County Fire Rescue and South Carolina Highway Patrol are urging drivers to take extra precautions after a series of emergency calls linked to unsecured loads on South Carolina roads.
Crews say they frequently respond to incidents where materials fall from vehicles, creating dangerous hazards for other motorists and forcing extended road closures. In one recent case, building materials spilled across the roadway, damaged a guardrail, and blocked traffic until crews could clear the debris.
Responders say these calls are becoming increasingly common.
They’ve handled vehicle damage, fires sparked when chains or materials dragged along the pavement in extremely dry conditions, and numerous crashes caused when drivers struck or swerved to avoid items that fell into the road.
The message from first responders is direct: secure your load before you drive. Cover materials, tie everything down, and make sure nothing can shift or fall while the vehicle is moving.
Drivers across South Carolina are also urged to stay alert for debris in the roadway. Leaving extra space between vehicles gives motorists more time and visibility to spot hazards before it’s too late.
