WILMINGTON, NC — A powerful winter storm sweeping across the Carolinas forced significant flight cancellations today at Wilmington International Airport (ILM), Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), disrupting travel for thousands as snow and ice intensified through the afternoon.

At Wilmington International Airport, at least eight flights were canceled, including arrivals from Chicago, Charlotte, Newark, Atlanta, and LaGuardia. All major carriers serving ILM – American, Delta, and United – scrubbed multiple flights as conditions deteriorated and crews worked to maintain safe operations. Many travelers from Brunswick and Columbus counties, who rely on ILM for regional and national connections, faced sudden schedule changes.

In neighboring Horry County, Myrtle Beach International Airport reported more than a dozen cancellations, with at least 14 flights grounded by midday. The disruptions affected passengers from southern Brunswick County who frequently use MYR for low‑cost carriers such as Spirit and Southwest.

The most severe impact hit Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a major connecting hub for travelers from both counties. CLT recorded more than 700 cancellations today, with American Airlines – the airport’s dominant carrier – bearing the brunt of the disruption. The widespread shutdown created ripple effects across the East Coast, impacting connecting flights for ILM and MYR passengers.

Winter Storm Gianna is expected to continue affecting the region into Sunday, with additional cancellations possible.
