USPS turns to an out‑of‑county annex as Leland’s mail volume surges
LELAND, NC — Brunswick County’s population surge continues to reshape daily services, and the U.S. Postal Service is feeling the strain. As Leland’s rapid expansion drives record mail volume, local postal operations are leaning on temporary facilities, stretched staffing, and now an out‑of‑county annex to keep up.
Across the county, several postal sites are still working from temporary setups – including tents – as the agency navigates space limitations and construction delays.
The heaviest pressure sits in northern Brunswick County, where Leland’s growth has far exceeded the capacity of its long‑standing post office.
To ease the load, USPS has activated an operational annex in neighboring New Hanover County. The support site, located at 5744 Market Street in Wilmington, handles internal mail processing for Leland but does not provide public services. Residents cannot complete financial transactions, pick up packages, or access passport or biometric services at that location.
The staffing picture adds another layer of challenge. Postal employees across Brunswick County report being stretched thin, with more than a dozen open positions currently posted for the region. The combination of high demand and limited personnel has contributed to delays, heavier workloads, and continued reliance on temporary structures.
USPS maintains ten postal locations serving Brunswick County’s nineteen municipalities, but the system is under mounting pressure as the county remains one of the fastest‑growing areas in North Carolina. For Leland residents, the strain is increasingly visible and unlikely to ease without long‑term infrastructure investment.
