Joe emigrated the United States in 1954, when he was 18 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
In June 1956, he was transferred to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina where he met his wife, Susie. He was proud to serve working on fighter jets until his honorable discharge in June 1960 when he joined the Merchant Marines. From there, he joined the facilities staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD as a Maintenance Mechanic and retired in 2009. He and Susie retired to Calabash, NC.
Joe was also proud when he became a United States Citizen in March of 1963. He is predeceased by Susie Alice (Cooper) Viscarra who passed away beside Joe on April 2, 2026, 19 days before his passing, after almost 65 years of marriage.
Joe is survived by his four children: Morris Prevatte (Tina) of Lexington, SC, Michael Viscarra of Timonium, MD, Steve Viscarra (Gail) of Bolivia, NC, and Susanne Viscarra of Murrells Inlet, SC; three of his four siblings; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
