Myrtle Beach, SC — The splash pad at the James R. Frazier Community Center, located at 1404 Carver Street in Myrtle Beach, has been temporarily closed due to ongoing drought conditions in Horry County.
Although the amenity is not particularly old, it opened in June 2018 as the first public splash pad built by Horry County Parks and Recreation it was constructed with a straight‑to‑drain, open‑loop system. Unlike closed‑loop splash pads that recycle and filter water, open‑loop systems continuously draw fresh water and send it directly to the drain, resulting in significantly higher water use.
With regional drought conditions persisting and water‑conservation measures in place, county officials determined that operating an open‑loop splash pad is not feasible at this time. The closure will remain in effect until conditions improve and water‑use restrictions are lifted.
Families looking for a free water‑play option still have one nearby alternative: The Futrell Park Splash Pad, located at 1053 Futrell Drive in Myrtle Beach, remains open and free to use. The neighborhood park offers a small splash pad, playground, and shaded areas, providing a local option for children while the Frazier Community Center’s amenity is offline.
