James Edward “J.E.” Simmons, age 86 of the Beaverdam Community of Chadbourn, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday evening, April 19, 2026 at the Lower Cape Fear “Angel House” in Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church of which he was a member with Pastor Buddy Seay officiating. Interment will follow in the McPherson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:45 pm until 2:45 pm prior to the service on Wednesday.
His love for antique and classic cars led him to the opening of Simmons Classics for over 20 years. He was also a member and co-founder of Carolina Classics Auto Club in Columbus County.
He was the husband of the late Hilda Gray Smith Simmons who preceded him in 2022, and the son of the late Berry “Bud” Simmons and Louvenia Garrell Simmons. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Gladys S. Morris, Kathleen S. Horne, Don Simmons, Floyd Simmons and Pauline S. Hinson.
Survivors include a daughter, Starr Simmons Worthington (Ronald) of Ocean Isle Beach; two sons, Lynn Simmons (Cathy) of Chadbourn and Eddie Simmons of Lake Waccamaw; grandchildren, Jamie Stephens (Kay), Ryan Stephens (Stacy), Eden Rouse (Ben), Chelsea Simmons (Jeff) and Amber Simmons.
