Horry County Sends “Exemption Audit Notice” Letters to Residents Missing Legal Residence Document

Bright green envelopes alert homeowners that documentation is still needed to finalize their legal residence status before the May 31 deadline.

Horry County, SC —  Residents are being reminded that over the last several weeks bright green envelopes marked “Horry County Exemption Audit Notice” have been distributed by USPS. Officials say these letters should not be discarded, as they indicate that the Assessor’s Office is missing required documentation for a homeowner’s legal residence application.

The notices mailed to property owners who previously received provisional or conditional approval for the legal residence special assessment. That assessment applies only to homeowners who live in their South Carolina home full‑time and provides a significantly reduced tax rate.

Residents who receive an audit notice are being asked to submit the missing documents by May 31, 2026, to avoid a rebill at the $higher, non‑resident tax rate. Documents may be submitted by email, fax, or mail.

Homeowners with questions can contact the Horry County Assessor’s Office at 843.915.5040 or by email at hcg.Assessor@horrycountysc.gov.

Officials note that residents who do not currently receive the legal residence special assessment but believe they qualify may apply online through the county’s website.
