SLED, HCPD, CMPD and Myrtle Beach Police coordinate to apprehend two of three suspects in nine‑year‑old cold case
By BC News Staff Writer
South Carolina and North Carolina agencies worked together Monday to locate and arrest a murder suspect wanted in a 2017 Charlotte homicide, according to information from Horry County Police and the Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
On Monday, June 22, agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) contacted the Horry County Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) requesting assistance. The suspect was believed to be mobile in the Myrtle Beach area and possibly headed toward Charlotte.
HCPD’s VCAT team began searching for the suspect and vehicle. The vehicle was ultimately stopped by officers with HCPD’s 1st Precinct Patrol Division, allowing authorities to take the suspect into custody safely.
HCPD noted its appreciation for the strong working relationships between statewide and neighboring jurisdictions that make these operations possible.
The arrest was part of a larger multi‑agency effort connected to a nine‑year‑old cold case homicide in Charlotte.
CMPD announced Tuesday that its Cold Case Unit has identified three suspects in the August 3, 2017 killing of Raymond Johnson, who was found shot to death in the 3700 block of Monroe Road. The case went cold after the initial investigation but was later reopened by CMPD’s Cold Case detectives.
On June 16, detectives obtained murder warrants for:
- Nathaniel “Nate” Rorie, 39
- Broderick Falls, 39
- David Webber, 38
On June 22, CMPD’s VCAT team located and arrested Broderick Falls in Charlotte. He was interviewed and transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
That same day, CMPD VCAT working with SLED, HCPD, and the Myrtle Beach Police Department located and arrested Nathaniel Rorie in South Carolina. CMPD detectives traveled to Horry County to interview him. Rorie will undergo extradition proceedings before being returned to Mecklenburg County.
The third suspect, David Webber, is already incarcerated at the Roanoke River Correctional Institution in North Carolina. CMPD detectives are scheduled to interview him.
CMPD credited multiple agencies, including SLED, HCPD, Myrtle Beach Police, and the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, for their assistance. The department also acknowledged the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), DNA Labs International, Bode Technology, and the CMPD Crime Lab for forensic support.
With these arrests, CMPD reports the 2017 homicide clearance rate has risen to 77%.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact CMPD’s Homicide Cold Case Unit at 704.432.8477 or leave an anonymous tip with Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704.334.1600
