HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA – AND NOTES FROM THE PUBLISHER

Today, as families, friends, and communities gather to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we at Carolina Coast News are celebrating something special of our own — our sixth year of reporting news across the Carolinas through our parent company, Jones Media Partners LLC.

Six years ago today, we launched the Whiteville-based Columbus County News (CCN). Building CCN from the ground up wasn’t easy. It began out of necessity — I needed a reliable local newscast for the radio station I co-owned in Whiteville. After unsuccessful attempts to partner with the local newspaper for news content, I decided to create the news source myself. That decision became Columbus County News.

Like any new venture, CCN had its share of challenges. But through persistence, long hours, and a commitment to producing a quality news product, we found success. We marked our fifth anniversary one year ago today, and CCN continues on — now under new ownership and with significant changes — but still serving the community it was built for.

While CCN primarily covered Columbus County, it was always my desire to expand coverage to include Brunswick County, N.C. During my time at the helm, that expansion never happened – largely due to strong opposition from my news editor, who told me, “No one in Brunswick County cares about news and businesses in Columbus County, and people in Columbus County sure don’t give a hoot about Brunswick County.” Those were harsh words, and I didn’t agree with them at all.

Fast forward to the fall of 2025, when I decided to sell both my radio and newspaper interests in Columbus County – which I did. Within a couple of weeks, reality set in. With the daily grind gone and retirement not yet in my plans, I had to decide what to do next.

They say change is inevitable – when one door closes, another opens. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted it, I didn’t get the job as the new drummer for Rush, so I created a new digital news publication to cover both Brunswick and Columbus Counties. That’s how BC News & Dollar-Saver was born.

We quietly launched our new digital newspaper on January 1, 2026, and it didn’t take long for the positive comments to start coming in. Finally, I had news, weather, and more for both Columbus and Brunswick Counties – exactly what I had envisioned, with expanded coverage that readers and advertisers alike appreciated.

With steady growth and a desire to include Horry County, S.C., we rebranded BC News & Dollar-Saver as Coastal Carolina News – a new name to match our growth and expanded coverage across the Carolinas.

Although we have deep roots here and years of broadcast news experience, we are not an old-fashioned newspaper. We are a modern alternative that embraces technology – technology that allows us to gather more news at once and publish it quickly and accurately for you, our readers.

And unlike some of those faceless pop-up Facebook “news agencies,” you can call us anytime and talk to a real person. 📞 (910) 898‑2770 – for news, sales, or any concerns you might have.

So for Brunswick, Horry, and Columbus Counties, we have your local news – and our news is free. We will never ask you to pay for it. That’s a promise.
