HALLSBORO — Deputies are investigating a Monday morning theft at the Dollar General on Sam Potts Highway after a man reportedly stole multiple bags of dog food and fled before officers arrived.
The incident occurred at 9:46 a.m., with staff reporting that a 55‑year‑old Black male, 6’01” and 250 lbs, took four 25‑lb bags of dog food valued at $93.
Retail thefts at Dollar General locations have been rising statewide, with the company reporting a 30% increase in shrinkage across North Carolina stores in 2025. Columbus County deputies have responded to at least four similar thefts since March.
No arrest has been made, and investigators are reviewing store surveillance footage.
