A Flood Watch is in effect from Thursday, July 23 at 1:39 a.m. through Friday, July 24 at 2:00 p.m., covering much of southeastern North Carolina as forecasters warn of multiple rounds of heavy rainfall capable of producing flash flooding across the region.
According to NWS Wilmington NC, a watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, and residents should remain alert as weather conditions evolve.
The watch includes Bladen, Columbus, Robeson, Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, affecting both inland and coastal communities.
A slow‑moving cold front will approach and stall over southeastern North Carolina from Thursday into Friday, creating conditions for repetitive periods of heavy rainfall.
Forecast guidance indicates 2 – 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible where storms repeatedly track over the same areas. These totals may quickly overwhelm drainage systems, leading to rapid rises in creeks, streams, rivers, and low‑lying areas.
Emergency managers caution residents to avoid flooded roadways, noting that water will rise quickly during heavier downpours.
Poor‑drainage locations, areas with recent high‑water events, and communities near small streams remain at elevated risk for flash flooding.
NWS Wilmington NC encourages residents to monitor conditions closely as additional rainfall bands develop through Thursday and Friday.
