WHITEVILLE, NC — The Sawmill Apartments fire that displaced seven families on Friday destroyed all eight units in the building. According to the fire marshal, the fire was caused by negligence involving improperly discarded smoking materials.
The American Red Cross is assisting all seven displaced families with temporary lodging, emergency supplies, and casework support.
Fire crews from Whiteville, Lake Waccamaw, Brunswick, and other assisting departments brought the fire under control.
