State election officials emphasize a thorough research and due process period before any registration updates are made
RALEIGH, NC — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released new data showing that the federal SAVE database identified 1,599 potential non-U.S. citizens currently registered to vote in North Carolina.
The flagged records represent roughly 0.02% of the state’s approximately 7.8 million registered voters.
State Board of Elections Executive Director Sam Hayes noted that while the proportion is minimal, election officials treat every potential discrepancy with strict seriousness.
State and county boards of elections are launching a comprehensive review process, cross-referencing internal records and primary public data sources to verify the citizenship status of each individual. Officials confirmed that no registrations will be immediately canceled, and every flagged voter will receive proper notice and full due process before any formal removal proceedings can take place.
