Dosher’s 30th Operation Medicine Cabinet Collects More Than 10,000 Narcotic Pills

Community turnout leads to safe disposal of more than 10,000

SOUTHPORT, NC — Dosher Memorial Hospital marked its 30th semiannual Operation Medicine Cabinet on Wednesday, April 1, with 270 households participating in the drive‑through medication disposal event. By the end of the four‑hour collection window, staff and volunteers had received 10,610 expired or unwanted narcotic pills and 1,334.5 milliliters of narcotic liquids. All medications were sorted on site and transported off hospital grounds for safe incineration.

Dosher President and CEO Lynda Stanley said the turnout reflects the community’s ongoing commitment to safe medication practices.
“We are very encouraged by the community response to Operation Medicine Cabinet. The volume of medication collected reflects a shared commitment to safety, prevention, and responsible stewardship of prescription drugs,” Stanley said.

In addition to Dosher employees, staff and volunteers from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Coastal Horizons assisted with collection and provided law‑enforcement support throughout the event.
“These community partners play a critical role in protecting our community and advancing efforts to prevent prescription drug misuse,” Stanley said.

The next Operation Medicine Cabinet is planned for October 2026. Residents can check the event calendar at Dosher.org for the confirmed date and time.
