Juvenile petitions have been filed after a masked youth was accused of pulling on door handles at several homes in Cerro Gordo, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were contacted on February 27 after multiple residents reported a juvenile wearing a mask and hoodie attempting to open doors at different homes. In one incident, the youth reportedly walked around the property and spent time under a carport before being confronted by the homeowner. The suspect ran from the scene.

Deputies later located a teen on Railroad Street East who matched the description provided by residents. According to the sheriff’s office, the homeowners involved said they wished to press charges.

Because the suspect is a minor, deputies sought juvenile petitions, the legal process used in North Carolina to charge individuals under the age of 18. The teen was released to a guardian pending further action through the juvenile court system.

The sheriff’s office did not release the juvenile’s name, consistent with state law.
