Local Philanthropist Brett Burroughs Gifts Semiquincentennial Flags to Every School in District

WHITEVILLE, NC — As the United States prepares for its historic 250th anniversary this July, Columbus County students will have a daily reminder of the nation’s milestone. During the most recent Columbus County Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, April 6, the district officially recognized local educator and community leader Mr. Brett Burroughs for his donation of ‘America 250’ flags to every school in the system.

The contribution is part of a broader effort to commemorate the semiquincentennial, the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

A Legacy of Local Support

Mr. Burroughs, a retired longtime educator from South Columbus High School and current member of the Southeastern Community College Board of Trustees, has a deep history of service to the tri-county region. District officials noted that this donation provides a tangible way for students to connect with civic history as the 2026 celebrations reach their peak.

During the meeting, the district expressed its gratitude for the gift, stating:

“Columbus County Schools extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Burroughs for his support and commitment to our students and community. This contribution helps commemorate the upcoming semiquincentennial and provides schools with a meaningful way to celebrate our nation’s history.”

The flags align with the America 250 NC initiative, a statewide push to engage all 100 North Carolina counties in the 250th-anniversary festivities. By placing these flags at every campus, Columbus County Schools ensures that the significance of the “July 4, 1776–2026” timeline remains a focal point for the remainder of the academic year.

Board members highlighted that such local partnerships are vital in bringing national history home to Columbus County classrooms. The flags are expected to be prominently displayed throughout the district as the community joins the rest of the country in celebrating the nation’s journey this summer.
