History of the Columbus County Farmers Market
The Columbus County Community Farmers Market began in 1998 as a small effort to connect local farmers with residents. In 1999, it received a $10,000 RAFI‑USA grant that helped it expand beyond its original downtown parking‑lot setup. The market was formally incorporated on Jan. 19, 2001, and soon moved to a temporary shelter near the Cooperative Extension and DSS, where vendor participation nearly doubled.
In 2005, the market opened its permanent 60′ x 120′ open‑air shelter at 132 Government Complex Road, offering 32 vendor spaces, electricity, restrooms, and parking. It continues to serve as a community hub for local produce, crafts, and seasonal events.
