Founded in 1968, the department continues its mission of protection, readiness, and community care

Cerro Gordo, NC — What began in 1968 as a small group of determined residents with a pumper, a tanker, a van, and a few volunteers has grown into one of the community’s most trusted institutions: the Cerro Gordo Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad. More than five decades later, the department remains rooted in the same purpose that inspired them to serve, protect, and respond when neighbors need help most.

Today, the department maintains a strong presence in town and online, with hundreds of followers and a long history of calls, rescues, and community support. The firefighters are known for their reliability: call, and they respond, ask for help, and they arrive.

Lifesaving isn’t just part of the job for many, it’s a calling.

Can emergency personnel find you? Seconds do matter when 911 is dialed. One of the most common challenges first responders face is something many residents overlook: address visibility. When emergencies happen, firefighters and medics rely on clear, readable house numbers to locate you quickly. A few small adjustments can save precious time.

Make Your Address Easy to Spot — If firefighters can’t see your address, they can’t find you quickly and, in an emergency, every second counts.

-Mailbox –
At least 4-inch reflective numbers
Numbers placed on both sides
High‑contrast colors for quick visibility

-Home –
Numbers at least 4 inches tall
Visible from the road
Not blocked by bushes, décor, or clutter
Positioned where porch or street lighting can illuminate them

A Community Calling and an Open Invitation — The department continues to welcome new volunteers who want to be part of something larger than themselves. Members train together, respond together, and uphold a legacy built over more than 50 years.

Weekly training is held every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the fire station, located at 75 Railroad Street East in Cerro Gordo.
Residents interested in joining are encouraged to stop in, meet the team, and learn how they can contribute to the department’s mission.

The department proudly reminds the community: “We are here and appreciate you all.”
