BOLIVIA, NC — With drought conditions worsening and water demand rising ahead of the Independence Day holiday, Brunswick County has expanded its recommended actions under the ongoing Stage 1 Water Conservation Alert. County officials are urging all customers to follow updated irrigation schedules and best‑practice guidance to help avoid mandatory restrictions.
County utilities report that water demand has exceeded 80% of available production and distribution capacity, driven largely by irrigation.
Customers are asked to limit irrigation to overnight hours and follow the countywide odd/even schedule:
- No irrigation on Mondays
- Odd‑numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 8:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m.
- Even‑numbered addresses: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday 8:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m.
These apply to all customers of Brunswick County Public Utilities, including unincorporated areas and the communities of Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Calabash, Carolina Shores, Caswell Beach, Navassa, Northwest, Sandy Creek, Shallotte, Southport, St. James, Sunset Beach, and Varnamtown. They also apply to Bald Head Island, Holden Beach, Oak Island, and Ocean Isle Beach, which purchase water from the county.
The alert does not apply to customers of Brunswick Regional H2GO, or to users of private groundwater wells or reclaimed water systems.
Residents are asked to:
- Minimize non‑essential water use.
- Follow the updated irrigation schedule and limit watering to less than 1 inch per week.
- Use hand‑held hoses or containers for essential plant maintenance when possible.
- Avoid watering pavement or washing driveways and patios.
- Limit use of washing machines and dishwashers, running only full loads.
- Repair leaks, install water‑efficient fixtures, and avoid leaving faucets running.
- Use drought‑tolerant plants and maintain healthy soil and mulch.
- Serve water in restaurants only upon request.
- Use showers instead of baths and keep showers brief.
Use of fire hydrants remains restricted to firefighting, approved testing, and required line flushing.
County officials emphasize that this is not a water quality advisory; no boil‑water action is required unless a separate low‑pressure notice is issued.
Residents will be notified if conditions require additional conservation measures or if restrictions are lifted. Questions should be directed to your water service provider or Brunswick County Public Utilities at 910.253.2657
