Brunswick Commissioners Advance Stormwater Study, Update Water Shortage Plan

Board approves feasibility contract and explores reuse water options to conserve treated supply

Bolivia, NC —  The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met Monday, July 6, at 3:00 p.m., approving several measures focused on water management and environmental efficiency.

Under the administrative report, commissioners unanimously approved (4–0) a contract with Raftelis to conduct a Stormwater Utility Feasibility Study. The study aims to evaluate funding strategies and long-term sustainability for stormwater infrastructure across the county.

In utilities business, the board also unanimously adopted (4–0) an updated Water Shortage Response Plan. The revised plan includes staff-recommended adjustments and legal review clarifying irrigation schedules.

Commissioners requested Public Utilities staff return with potential amendments and further investigation into providing treated effluent (reuse) water from wastewater facilities to developers for specific uses – such as dust control and irrigation – to reduce reliance on treated water in the county’s system.

During informal discussion, Commissioner Frank Williams introduced a motion directing staff to draft a letter to the county’s state legislative delegation. The letter will request authorization for Public Utilities to supply reuse water to developers under state permit through the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. The motion passed unanimously (4–0).

Commissioner Pat Sykes was absent for personal reasons.
