NCDA&CS inspectors report 9.67% error rate at Southport‑Supply Road store

BOLIVIA, NC — The Dollar General on Southport‑Supply Road in Bolivia has been fined $3,945 after state inspectors documented repeated price‑scanning errors during routine checks, according to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ (NCDA&CS) Standards Division. The store was one of ten locations across 9 counties cited in the department’s latest enforcement update covering the final quarter of 2025.
Inspectors found that the Bolivia store recorded a 9.67% error rate, well above the state’s allowable threshold. The Standards Division conducts unannounced inspections to ensure that shelf prices match what customers are charged at the register, as required under the North Carolina Weights and Measures Act. During the inspection, multiple items rang up at higher prices than those posted on shelves, prompting the fine and triggering follow‑up requirements for the store to correct its pricing systems.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said statewide scanner accuracy improved in 2025 but stressed that continued oversight remains essential. “We continue to check prices in retail locations, which hopefully means fewer surprises at the register and more confidence that consumers are paying exactly what they expect,” Troxler said in the NCDA&CS report. He encouraged shoppers to stay alert and report any discrepancies they encounter.
For Brunswick County residents, the issue carries particular weight. Dollar General stores serve as primary shopping options in many rural areas, including the Bolivia–Supply corridor, where access to larger retailers is limited. Even small overcharges can add up for families who rely on discount chains for groceries, household goods, and personal‑care items.
NCDA&CS advises shoppers to pay attention as items are scanned, keep their receipts, and report suspected overcharges to the Standards Division so inspectors can follow up when needed. The Bolivia store, located at 1745 Southport‑Supply Road, will be subject to additional monitoring to ensure compliance going forward.
