A strong thunderstorm north of Oak Island is moving south at 20 miles per hour, and the National Weather Service warns it is capable of producing a landspout.
The storm is currently near Mill Creek, with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour.
Radar indicates rotation, and forecasters say minor damage is possible, including downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around.
Communities in the path include Oak Island, Caswell Beach, Ocean Crest Pier, Boiling Spring Lakes, St. James, Southport, Bolivia, and Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Residents should move indoors, secure loose items, and monitor updates as the storm approaches the coast.
