TABOR CITY — For the first time in more than two decades, South Columbus High School hosted a home track meet this week, officially unveiling a brand‑new running track made possible through major community support.

The long‑awaited facility was introduced under clear skies as students, coaches, families, and supporters gathered for an opening ceremony celebrating what many described as a milestone moment for the Stallion athletic program.
The project was funded with significant support from the Jimmy Woodard Garrell Foundation, whose contribution turned years of need into a reality for current and future student‑athletes. School leaders expressed deep appreciation for the foundation’s board, along with Mrs. Beck, SCHS administration, and the coaching staff who helped bring the project to completion.
“This community truly cares about its young people, and that’s what makes South Columbus so special,” organizers said during the ceremony.

The new track immediately came to life as the Stallions hosted their first home meet since the early 2000s. Events ran simultaneously across the infield and lanes, giving spectators a full view of the action as athletes competed on their home surface for the first time in a generation.
Coaches described the day as both historic and energizing, noting that the upgraded facility will expand training opportunities, improve safety, and allow South Columbus to once again serve as a host site for conference competition.
Families and students filled the stands throughout the meet, capturing photos and cheering as the Stallions marked the beginning of a new era for the school’s track and field program.
“It was a great day, and it’s an awesome time to be a Stallion,” school officials said.
