Historic “America 250” Celebration Brings WWII Legends to ILM and Carolina Beach
Wilmington, NC — The Cape Fear region is preparing for a massive double-header of aviation history this April as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration. Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States, Wilmington, the nation’s first designated World War II Heritage City will host two distinct events featuring iconic “Warbird” aircraft.
The festivities kick off April 10–12 at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) with the Warbirds Over Wilmington ground show. Located at the South Ramp near the National Guard hangars, this free event allows the public to get up close with legendary planes like the TBM Avenger torpedo bomber and the SNJ Texan. Visitors can explore static displays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, with various aircraft and helicopter rides available for a $$ cost.
The excitement moves to the oceanfront later in the month for the Wings Over Carolina Beach Air Show, held April 24–26. While there is no ground display at the beach, the skies will come alive starting at 12:00 p.m. each day with high-speed aerial performances. The show features the precision formation flying of Warbird Thunder and heart-pounding aerobatics, serving as a shoreline tribute to the country’s 250-year journey. Spectators are encouraged to head to the Carolina Beach Boardwalk for the best views.
Between these two weekends, history buffs can also catch a one-day exhibition of North Carolina’s original 1776 Constitution at the Cape Fear Museum on April 11, further anchoring this month of military and revolutionary remembrance.
