Restaurant Review: Smoke House Wood-Smoked BBQ – Shallotte
Rating: 10 out of 10
Slow-smoked brisket, gallon sweet tea, and the best hush puppies in town: Revisiting a Brunswick County BBQ cornerstone
SHALLOTTE, NC — When first moving to this area in early 2019, one of the very first places we chose to try was Smoke House Wood-Fired BBQ. I remember that first visit: Troy, the owner, took our order himself. He was eager to share the craft behind their wood-smoke process, walking us through his choice of sides and explaining how each house-made sauce paired with the meat.
That personal touch made an impression then, and it’s a culture that clearly remains today.
The Verdict: No Sauce Required
We recently stopped into the Shallotte location at 4462 Main Street, and the experience held up. The star of the show is the slow-smoked brisket and the wood-smoked pulled pork. The flavor from the wood smoke is so deep and well-developed that you don’t even need to think about using sauce. It’s “stand-alone” over the top good.
If you do like a little extra tang, they have several house-made varieties available but do yourself a favor and take that first bite plain.

Southern Staples Done Right
The menu is refreshingly basic, focusing on doing the classics well. You’ll find:
-
Creamy Mac and Cheese (a personal favorite)
-
Collards & Green Beans
-
Baked Beans & White Slaw
And if you’ve ever seen people leaving with sweet tea by the gallon, there’s a reason. If you’ve had it, you know.
The “Best in Town” Personal Note
If there is one item you absolutely cannot leave without, it’s the Smoke House Hush Puppies. These are, hands down, the best in town. They hit that elusive “perfect” mark: a satisfying round, golden-brown crunch on the outside that yields to a tender center. The flavor is a masterful sweet-and-salty combo, made even better when you dip them into the signature cinnamon butter. If you haven’t tried these yet, why not? They are worth the trip to Main Street all by themselves.
The Atmosphere
The Shallotte restaurant is a casual, “order-at-the-front” spot where you seat yourself. It’s consistently clean, organized, and has a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. The workers are polite, and while Pastor Troy can’t be at all his locations at once (they have the original restaurant in Southport and yet another in Money Junction, Wilmington), he still makes sure he is front and center as much as possible.
While the Leland location near Aldi’s has since closed, the heart of the operation is beating strong in Shallotte and Southport. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s a staple for a reason.
