SUNSET BEACH, N.C. — As visitors and residents enjoy the coastal beauty of Sunset Beach, town officials are reminding dog owners of the seasonal rules that help keep the shoreline safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone — including four‑legged companions.
The town allows dogs on the beach year‑round, but access varies depending on the season. During the off‑season, which runs from the day after Labor Day through the Friday before Memorial Day, dogs are permitted on the beach at any time, provided they remain leashed and under the owner’s control.
Stricter rules apply during the summer months. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are prohibited on the beach between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Outside those hours — before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. — leashed dogs are welcome.
Town officials emphasize that pet waste must be picked up and properly disposed of at all times. Dog waste poses health risks to beachgoers and marine life, and failure to clean up after a pet can result in a $100 fine per violation.
The town also encourages responsible pet ownership by reminding visitors to keep dogs leashed, respect other beach users, and be mindful of local wildlife.
Full regulations can be found in the Town of Sunset Beach Code of Ordinances governing dogs on the beach.
