Southport shooting suspect Nigel Max Edge files grievance alleging denial of medical care and blocked access to legal representation while held without bond in Brunswick County.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — An inmate at the Brunswick County Detention Center has filed a grievance alleging medical neglect and a lack of access to legal counsel. According to the filing, Edge reported that he was denied his prescribed medical brace and access to water, which he says led to severe symptoms including chills, fever, sweats, swelling, and bloody stools.

In the grievance, Edge wrote that he had been “denied my leg brace, broke my foot as a result, denied water,” claiming those conditions caused significant swelling and worsening symptoms.

Filed July 5, 2026 and logged by the Clerk of Superior Court in Brunswick County, the grievance remains under review. Edge also requested new legal representation, alleging negligence by authorities. The filing lists Officer B. Frye. No findings or committee notes have been recorded.

Edge is currently being held without bond following a January 5 grand jury indictment related to the mass shooting at American Fish Company in Southport last fall.

Court records show he faces three counts of first‑degree murder in the deaths of Solomon Banjo, Joy Rogers and Michael Durbin, along with multiple counts of attempted first‑degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and discharging a firearm into an occupied property.

The charges stem from the September 27 shooting where Edge is accused of opening fire on patrons. He has not been convicted of any of the charges and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
