Crews expect Surfside work to finish within days before shifting south toward Garden City and Georgetown County
Grand Strand, SC — The federally funded beach renourishment project along Horry County’s coastline is entering its final stretch, with construction crews reporting the effort is now roughly 90% to 95% complete. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, the contractor hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says teams are currently finishing the Surfside Beach section, including the oceanfront campgrounds and the stretch leading to the southern boundary of Myrtle Beach State Park.
Work in Surfside is expected to wrap up within the next week. Once complete, the dredge will return to Garden City to place sand south of the Garden City Pier. From there, construction will continue moving southward until the project reaches the Georgetown County line, where final work is anticipated to conclude in late August.
The renourishment effort began in December and aims to restore storm‑damaged sand, reinforce dunes, and strengthen the coastline against erosion and future storm impacts. Federal officials say the project is part of a long‑term strategy to protect both the shoreline and nearby infrastructure, particularly in areas that have experienced repeated storm‑related losses.
