Town officials move forward with technical surveys for dam maintenance
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
LAKE WACCAMAW, NC — The Town of Lake Waccamaw has advanced to the second phase of its engineering review for the dam located at Lake Waccamaw State Park. Municipal leadership has authorized the initiation of critical topographic and bathymetry surveys to evaluate the dam’s structural condition and hydrology.
The current assessments are designed to identify long-term repair needs and environmental requirements for the site. By moving forward with these surveys now, the town aims to utilize current water level conditions to facilitate accurate technical data collection.
This project is being managed as a local municipal initiative. While the town previously sought state-level support through the introduction of House Bill 843 (“Lake Waccamaw Dam Repairs”) in the 2025 legislative session, that bill was referred to the Committee on State and Local Government on April 10, 2025, and did not advance further.
Despite the legislation not being enacted, the town is proceeding with its own administrative and engineering processes. Upon completion of these current surveys, the project is expected to progress into the next stages of design, planning, and environmental compliance review.
