Shallotte, NC — A Calabash firefighter is being praised for helping get a baby to safety during Friday night’s wildfire evacuation near Old Georgetown Road and Hale Swamp Road in Shallotte.
A widely shared photo shows William B. of the Calabash Fire Department carrying the infant toward a vehicle as smoke thickened behind the evacuation zone. Shallotte town crews publicly commended his actions, writing, “Your professionalism and swift response is proof that heroes don’t always wear capes.” They added, “From the bottom of our hearts (and slightly congested lungs), thank you.”
By Saturday evening, more than 40 homes were considered in danger as the Quarry Road Fire expanded. Brunswick County officials said 19 county fire departments, along with crews from Columbus County, New Hanover County and Horry County, SC, worked together “like a well‑oiled team” to bring the wildfire under control. By Sunday, no homes were threatened, and all affected roads had reopened.
Officials noted that organic materials inside the burn area continue to smolder and may produce noticeable smoke for some time. Containment efforts remain ongoing.
