Calabash, NC — Firefighters with the Calabash Fire Department were able to quickly contain a woods fire Tuesday, June 9 afternoon after flames began spreading toward homes in the Carolina Shores North subdivision.

Crews arrived to find a fast‑moving ground fire burning among trees and dry brush. Despite the rapid spread, firefighters were able to stop the flames before they reached any structures. No homes were damaged and no injuries were reported.

According to the department, the fire was first spotted by a jogger who noticed smoke and alerted nearby residents, helping ensure a quicker response.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Brunswick County remains under an active burn ban due to prolonged dry conditions. The ban prohibits all open burning, including yard debris, brush piles, and recreational fires until conditions improve. Local officials warn that even small fires can escape containment within minutes, given the current low humidity and dry vegetation.

Fire officials urge residents to stay aware of fire danger levels, avoid any outdoor burning, and report smoke or fire immediately.
