WHITEVILLE, NC — The Columbus County Board of Elections meets today, June 8, at 5:00 p.m. to discuss a controversial proposal to slash the number of early voting sites from five to just one.
The motion, introduced by Chair Jillian McPherson-Edge on May 11, would force all early voters to the central Board of Elections office in Whiteville. Critics, including the Southern Coalition for Social Justice and the local NAACP, warn that this shift ignores the county’s 955-square-mile size, potentially creating significant travel burdens and wait times for residents.
Despite the Elections Board’s push for consolidation, the County Board of Commissioners recently approved a budget sufficient to maintain the traditional five-site configuration.
The meeting will be held at 2586 James B. White Highway N, Building B, Whiteville. Public attendance is expected to be high as the Board moves toward a final decision on the election plan, currently set for June 29.
