Multi‑agency response stops flames from spreading; officials urge safe debris‑burning practices

CALABASH, NC — A shed fire on No. 5 School Road drew a multi‑department response Wednesday afternoon after dispatchers received reports of a non‑dwelling structure fire just before 4:30 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the shed fully involved, with flames also spreading through a nearby pile of burning yard debris. Crews from Calabash Fire Department, Sunset Beach Fire, Ocean Isle Beach Fire, and Horry County Fire Rescue worked together to knock down the fire and prevent it from spreading to surrounding structures or wooded areas. No injuries were reported.

The scene showed heavy charring and smoldering debris as firefighters used handlines to cool hotspots and overhaul the remains of the structure. Tools and equipment were staged nearby as crews worked through the final pockets of smoke.

Calabash Fire officials said the incident highlights the value of strong automatic‑aid partnerships, which allow neighboring departments to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies.

With outdoor burning increasing this time of year, officials are reminding residents to follow safe practices when burning yard debris at home:

Burn pile distance – Keep piles at least 50 feet from structures and 25 feet from wooded areas or combustible materials
Never leave fires unattended – Stay with the burn until it is fully extinguished
Water and tools nearby – Keep a hose, bucket, or hand tools close in case conditions change
Avoid windy or dry days – Wind and low humidity can cause fires to spread rapidly
Burn only natural vegetation – Do not burn trash, treated wood, or construction debris
Check for restrictions – Confirm whether burn bans or local rules are in effect before lighting any fire

Fire officials continue to encourage residents to burn responsibly to help reduce preventable emergencies and protect surrounding homes and wooded areas.
