NCDOT says the new roundabout will replace the angled Lee–Franklin–Madison intersection.

WHITEVILLE, NC — Construction is set to begin soon on a $1.8 million NCDOT roundabout that will replace the angled intersection where Lee Street and Franklin Street meet South Madison Street just south of downtown Whiteville.

NCDOT says the new roundabout will replace the existing traffic signal at a location that sees about 16,000 vehicles per day. According to the agency, roundabouts built in North Carolina have reduced fatal and injury crashes by 79%, while also improving traffic flow by eliminating the need to wait at a red light. Drivers entering the roundabout will simply yield to vehicles already circulating inside it.

The contract was awarded this week to Highland Paving Co. of Fayetteville, which can begin work in late March and has until the end of the year to complete the project.

Upcoming Road Closure

As part of this construction, NCDOT has announced that S. Franklin Street will close in both directions at its intersection with S. Madison Street beginning Tuesday, June 23, with the closure expected to last approximately 14 days.

During the project, the contractor will need to temporarily close the intersection and detour traffic onto Lee Street.
