Find Your Freeze: Braving the February Surf to Benefit Special Olympics Brunswick County
OAK ISLAND, NC — On Saturday, February 21, 2026, the shores of Oak Island will see a surge of brave souls trading their winter coats for swimsuits. The Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Brunswick County returns to Middleton Park, inviting the community to take a high-stakes dip into the frigid Atlantic to support local athletes.
The event, which runs from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., is the premier winter fundraiser for the organization. Participants must meet a fundraising minimum to earn their spot in the surf, with additional “frozen glory” incentives awarded to top earners. Every dollar raised provides year-round sports training, competition, and inclusive programming for Special Olympics athletes across Brunswick County.
Cold Water, Warm Hearts
For those who prefer to stay dry, the event offers a Too Chicken to Plunge registration category. These supporters can still fundraise and earn an official event t-shirt while cheering from the safety of the sand.
“This is about more than just the cold water,” organizers say. “It’s a powerful show of solidarity. Whether you are jumping in or cheering from the dunes, you are helping to build a more inclusive community where every athlete has the chance to shine.”
