Jason and Marci Lowry matched all five white balls in the Dec. 27 drawing after choosing numbers based on family birthdays.
Winnabow, NC — Jason and Marci Lowry, a brother and sister from Winnabow, say their tradition of choosing lottery numbers based on family birthdays finally paid off with a Lucky for Life prize worth $25,000 a year for life.
“We are thrilled that the winning numbers represent special dates,” they said.
The Lowry’s bought their $2.00 ticket at E‑Z Way Grocery on North Howe Street in Southport. They won by matching all five white balls in the Dec. 27 Lucky for Life drawing, beating odds of 1 in 1.8 million.
“This is really sweet,” Jason said.
When they arrived at lottery headquarters Monday, they faced a choice: receive $25,000 a year for life or take a $390,000 lump sum. They chose the lump sum and split it evenly. Each claimed $195,000, and after required state and federal tax withholdings, each took home $140,443.
They plan to use their winnings to pay bills and make car and home repairs.
