WINNABOW, NC — Winnabow Volunteer Fire & Rescue proudly recognized Firefighters Roberts and O’Connor this week as they received their black Interior Firefighter helmet shields from Chief Mercer and Assistant Chief A. Lentz.

Receiving a black shield and removing the probationary firefighter shield marks one of the most meaningful milestones in a firefighter’s early career. The helmet is among the most iconic pieces of the fire service, symbolizing readiness, responsibility, and the trust placed in those who enter hazardous environments to protect lives and property.

This transition reflects the completion of foundational training, demonstrated competence on the fireground, and a commitment to the traditions and expectations of the fire service. It is a moment of pride for both the firefighter and the department, connecting new interior firefighters to generations of those who have served before them.

Winnabow Volunteer Fire & Rescue invites the community to join in congratulating Firefighters O’Connor and Roberts on this significant accomplishment.
