WHITEVILLE, NC — March 11, 2026 A woman has died following an early morning assault at a Whiteville business, prompting a homicide investigation now underway by local authorities and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The incident occurred at Stronger Body Fitness, located at 711 North Thompson Street, sometime between 5:30 and 6:30 AM. Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after 5:30 AM and transported the victim to Columbus Regional Healthcare System, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach confirmed the fatality and said the case is now classified as a homicide. Investigators have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
“This appears to be an isolated incident,” Rockenbach said. “There is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.”
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with forensic analysis and scene documentation. No suspect information has been released, and authorities have not disclosed whether a weapon was involved.
The fitness center remained closed Wednesday morning as investigators processed the scene. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Whiteville Police Department.
