WHITEVILLE — A Whiteville man was arrested Thursday following an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigation that police say uncovered online activity and cryptocurrency transactions linked to child sexual abuse material.
Michael Deshawn Smith‑Green, 38, of 101 Stanley Street, was taken into custody on May 28 after Whiteville Police Department investigators executed a search warrant at his home. According to the department, the investigation began in April when ICAC analysts identified Bitcoin transactions and online activity consistent with the purchase of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Detectives with the ICAC Task Force and the Criminal/Narcotics Investigation Division developed evidence that led to Smith‑Green’s arrest. He is charged with felony conspiracy to obtain or purchase child sexual abuse material.
Smith‑Green was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond and released later the same day. The charge is listed as awaiting trial.
The Whiteville Police Department said it remains committed to aggressively investigating crimes involving the exploitation of children and continues to work with local, state, and federal partners to identify offenders.
All individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
