Whiteville, NC — Whiteville Officials Urge Residents to Prepare for Winter Storm and Possible Power Outages

Whiteville Emergency Services is urging residents to prepare now for a winter storm expected to bring icy conditions and potential multi‑day power outages this weekend. Officials warn that some areas could lose electricity for an extended period, making early preparation essential.

Residents who rely on oxygen or temperature‑sensitive medications should secure extra supplies before the storm arrives. Households are encouraged to gather water, non‑perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries, and to fully charge phones and backup power packs. Extra blankets and warm clothing should be kept within easy reach, and homeowners are advised to insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip during extreme cold.

Emergency officials recommend staying home once icy conditions begin. If travel becomes unavoidable, drivers should keep their gas tanks full, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance.

NWS Storm Planning Timeline (National Weather Service)

Power outage safety remains a major concern. Generators should only be used outdoors and away from doors and windows. Grills, camp stoves, and open flames should never be used indoors, and flashlights are preferred over candles to reduce fire risk. Residents should avoid downed power lines and steer clear of trees or power lines weighed down by ice.

Now is also a good time to sign up for Alert Whiteville, the City’s emergency notification system. The service allows officials to send timely information to residents during severe weather, outages, and other urgent situations. Registration is available at https://www.whitevillenc.gov/alert-whiteville

Officials encourage residents to monitor local weather updates, enable emergency alerts, and check on neighbors — especially older adults and those with medical needs.

Whiteville Public Safety and Public Works crews say they are prepared for the storm and urge the community to take steps now to stay safe.
