Southport Police Seek Public’s Help After More Than 240 Items Slashed Along Parade Route
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
SOUTHPORT, NC — A holiday weekend tradition in Southport took a disheartening turn this year, as authorities report that over 240 items set out along the NC Fourth of July Festival parade route were intentionally vandalized.
Early Friday morning, July 3, local Public Works crews patrolling North Howe Street discovered a series of folding chairs and pop-up tents that had been slashed. As police expanded their investigation along the route, they documented widespread destruction of personal property that residents had placed days in advance, a common practice to secure viewing spots for the town’s most anticipated annual celebration.
For many in the community, claiming a spot on Howe Street is more than just a logistical task; it is a time-honored ritual that marks the beginning of the festival weekend, providing a space for neighbors to gather and visitors to enjoy the local atmosphere. The vandalism has left many residents without their seating and has cast a shadow over the festive preparations.
Seeking Public Assistance
The Southport Police Department is treating this as a case of intentional property damage and is actively seeking leads to identify those responsible.
Detective Riley Ransom is heading the inquiry and is asking anyone with information, including potential witnesses, neighborhood security footage, or photos of the scene to come forward. Investigators are specifically interested in:
-
Suspicious Activity: Reports of unusual noises, unfamiliar vehicles parked along Howe Street, or unexpected foot traffic during the overnight hours leading up to Friday morning.
-
Property Reports: If you had items damaged, please contact Detective Ransom via email at rransom@cityofsouthport.gov
When filing a report, please include your full name, contact information, the exact location of the damaged property, a description of the items, and an estimated value.
Even small observations can be critical to the investigation. The department encourages residents to reach out if they saw anything out of the ordinary, noting that every detail may help identify those responsible for disrupting this cherished community tradition.
