Town recovers spill, repairs line; state regulators notified
Shallotte, NC — The Town of Shallotte reported an untreated wastewater discharge of approximately 800 gallons on the morning of March 15, 2026, after a break in a force main located at 613 Columbus Road.
According to the town, the release lasted less than an hour. Flow was stopped quickly and all visible wastewater was recovered. The damaged line was repaired immediately to prevent additional discharge.
This marks the third sewer-related incident reported by Shallotte since January first. On January 28, a malfunction at the town’s wastewater treatment plant led to a 15,000-gallon discharge near Forest Street Extension. Wastewater reached Woodward Branch, a tributary of the Shallotte River. February 9, a line break at Lightwood Lane caused a smaller spill of under 100 gallons, which was recovered. Its proximity to surface waters triggered a mandatory public notice.
As the saying goes, 3rd times a charm, March 15 another break. The incident on Columbus Road was contained quickly, with no reported impact to surface waters.
Under North Carolina General Statute 143‑215.1C, public notification is required when 1,000 gallons or more are discharged, or when any amount reaches surface waters. The town issued this release in accordance with that regulation.
The N.C. Department of Water Quality was notified on March 15 and is reviewing the matter. For more information, contact the Town of Shallotte at 910.754.4032.
