An estimated 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage escaped from a municipal lift station over a 12-hour period.
SHALLOTTE, NC — The Town of Shallotte Utilities Department has issued a public notice regarding a discharge of untreated wastewater that occurred over the weekend.
Over 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage escaped from a municipal lift station located at 4663 Mintz Street. According to town officials, the discharge began on the night of Saturday, May 17, 2026, and continued for ~12 hours before the issue was contained.
Upon discovery, utility crews immediately repaired the lift station to prevent any further spill. Officials stated that all visible loss of wastewater has been successfully recovered from the site.
Because the lift station is in close proximity to local waterways, water samples have been pulled from the Shallotte River and sent to a laboratory for testing to determine the extent of any environmental impact.
The public notification was issued in compliance with North Carolina General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215.1C, which mandates rapid public disclosure for wastewater spills of certain volumes.
Residents seeking further updates or specific details regarding the status of the river water testing are advised to contact the Town of Shallotte directly at 910.754.4032
