Hands-on program invites residents to master the art of catching and preparing the Carolinas’ most iconic coastal delicacy

OAK ISLAND, NC — Residents and visitors looking to master the art of the Carolina coast can now register for the “Crabbing to Cuisine” program hosted by the Oak Island Recreation Center.

Led by the “Oak Island Crab Man” from Steve’s Crab Shack, this hands-on educational series offers a deep dive into the world of the Blue Crab. Participants will learn everything from the basics of catching crabs and selecting the best bait to identifying local permitted crabbing areas.

Crabbing in the Carolinas is a timeless coastal tradition, often centered around the “chicken-necking” method where a simple string and bait are used to pull the prized Blue Crab from local salt marshes. This heritage is celebrated through community steams, where the catch is seasoned and vapor-cooked to preserve the sweet, delicate flavor that defines the region’s summer season.

Each session concludes with hands-on practice in picking Blue Crab, followed by a taste test that is sure to have your taste buds screaming for more.

‘Crabbing to Cuisine’ sessions are May 15, June 19, July 17, and August 21 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E Oak Island Drive.

Intended for 12 years and older, while participants under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult age 18 and older.

There is a cost to attend, and pre-registration is required and can be completed online at OakIslandNC.gov/PROGRAMS
