Crowds expected to surge as Wilmington prepares for its biggest spring traditions

The 2026 North Carolina Azalea Festival is gearing up for one of its most vibrant years yet, with three marquee attractions expected to draw the largest crowds: the Grand Parade, the Fireworks over the Cape Fear River, and the three‑day Waterfront Street Fair. Each event brings its own energy to downtown Wilmington, creating a weekend-long celebration that blends tradition, entertainment, and springtime color.

The Grand Parade, set for Saturday, April 11 at 9:30 a.m., remains the festival’s signature draw, attracting more than 100,000 spectators. The parade traditionally begins at 3rd and Market Streets, traveling down Market toward the riverfront. Prime viewing areas include the wide sidewalks along Market Street between 3rd and 5th, the lively stretch near City Hall, and the scenic blocks approaching Water Street. Downtown parking decks open early but typically fill by 8:00 a.m., and festival shuttles from satellite lots announced annually help ease congestion. Many attendees opt to park in the 2nd Street, Market Street, or Hanover decks and walk in.

As night falls, festivalgoers shift toward the riverfront for the Fireworks over the Cape Fear River, scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at approximately 9:00 p.m. The Riverwalk between Market and Princess Streets offers the most popular vantage point, while Riverfront Park, the Convention Center boardwalk, and upper levels of nearby parking decks provide excellent alternatives. Crowds begin gathering well before sunset, turning the waterfront into a packed, festive viewing zone.

Running throughout the weekend, the Waterfront Street Fair anchors the festival’s daytime activity with food, vendors, music, and family attractions. The fair opens Friday, April 10 from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., continues Saturday, April 11 from 10:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m., and concludes Sunday, April 12 from 10 a.m.– 6 p.m. Stretching across Water Street, Front Street, and the Riverwalk, it remains the festival’s most accessible and steady draw, offering three full days of shopping, entertainment, and springtime crowds.
