WILMINGTON, NC –– The NC Department of Transportation is proposing replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, a span many residents cross daily some multiple times a day for work, errands or appointments, others only occasionally when they need to venture across the river.
The agency has opened a formal public comment period as it evaluates two design alternatives.
NCDOT is considering either a movable‑span bridge with up to 135 foot of clearance or a fixed‑span bridge with a 135′ clearance and trumpet‑style interchange improvements. The project’s Environmental Assessment, completed with the Federal Highway Administration, is now available for public review.
Two hearings will be held: September the 14 at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington and September 15 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with presentations beginning at 6:00 p.m. Comments may also be submitted online, by phone or email through October. 15, 2026.
